Title |
Enamelled brooch fragment - foot only |
||
Description |
English: Roman brooch ; Fragment of cast copper alloy brooch with enamelled decoration. Possibly the foot of a trumpet derivative brooch of the 2nd century. The fragment is almost flat but has the remains of the catchplate on the back at the bottom and no indication of the pin at the top, implying that it is the foot of a larger brooch. The fragment consists of a circular boss, presumably from the bow of the brooch, which is decorated with a ring and dot of red enamel. The brooch narrows below the circular boss then flares out again to a rounded foot. The foot is decorated with a triangle of dark blue enamel which has three square cut-outs from it.
Length 33.34mm, width (top) 10.35mm, width (waist) 6.83mm, width (foot) 10.36mm, thickness (body) 2.95mm, thickness (with catchplate) 4.94mm, weight 3.24g Ref: Compare, for instance, Hattatt, page 330, figure 189, brooches 987, 986, 988 and 990 |
