Description
English: Empties Through Chester, near to Hoole, Cheshire, Great Britain.

A Class 47 diesel locomotive brings a train of empty hopper wagons through the station past the disused signal box. Since this photo was taken in 1979 the signal box has been removed, leaving a hole in the wall, and the complex scissor crossing in the foreground has been replaced with a simple crossover. The bridge remains in place as does the gasometer, visible in the distance.

The poster on the left was well known to those of us who travelled the railway network in the late 1970's. The caption read 'Want to see a friend this weekend?' The poster was advertising British Rail's Inter-City services.
