Description

Nearly a third of girls aged 15-19 in Zambia have been pregnant or have had a child, and nearly 13,000 girls drop out of school each year because of pregnancy.

International Development Minister Lynne Featherstone listened to the views of girls involved in a UK aid supported initiative the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Programme.

The initiative is in its pilot stage and will test the effectiveness of certain interventions. For example, some girls will learn money management skills and will have access to savings accounts. This will help reduce risky sexual behaviour and give girls greater negotiating power in sexual relationships. Some girls will also receive training on personal and reproductive health as well as receiving health vouchers for a range of age appropriate health services.
