Description

Overton Bros Wire Rope Works Ltd, c.1940s The ending of the age of sail in the late 19th century saw a decline in the demand for traditional rope rigging and the introduction of steel cable increased it’s demise even further. Halls Barton Ropery Co. Ltd, rope manufacturers, made it a priority to engage in wire rope manufacture and began this in 1891. No wire rope was actually produced on the old Barton site, instead they purchased Overton Brothers wire rope works in Beverley. This image shows some of the workforce at the Holme Church Lane site, Beverley, stood surrounding one of the ropes, note its huge size in comparison. The firm closed in 1993.
