Deutsch: Obwohl das Eis in der Antarktis nahezu den gesamten Kontinent bedeckt, gibt es im ewigen Eis trotzdem Gebiete, die für die Planetenforschung von höchstem Interesse sind. Diese Regionen werden oft wegen geologischer bzw. geomorphologischer Ähnlichkeiten, wegen der tiefen Temperaturen, der höheren UV-Einstrahlung sowie extremen Trockenheit als analoge Gebiete zu Mars oder gar Eismonden von Jupiter und Saturn bezeichnet. Bisher sind insbesondere aufgrund intensiver jahrzehntelanger Forschungskampagnen durch die NASA die Trockentäler der Dry Valleys in der Antarktis bekannt. Für die Expedition GANOVEX 13 unter der Leitung des BGR (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe) sind Ende Oktober 2018 zwei Forscher des DLR-Instituts für Planetenforschung in Berlin in Richtung Südpol aufgebrochen, um für die internationale Planetenforschung noch unbekannte antarktische Gebiete zu erkunden und gemäß ihrer geologisch-geomorphologischen Besonderheiten mit Strukturen auf dem Mars zu vergleichen.
