[edit]DescriptionElysium Montes - 1978-05-28 (33196803074).png |
Two-frame color mosaic of the Elysium Montes volcanic complex taken by Viking Orbiter 1 on May 28, 1978. The highest of the volcanoes, Elysium Mons, is marked by a light orographic cloud. This is because the 14 km high volcanic massif forces air to rise up over it and crystallize the small amount of water vapor present. To its left is the 5 km high Hecates Tholus, and to the right is the 4.5 km high Albor Tholus. Image Credit: NASA / JPL / USGS / Viking Project / Justin Cowart |
