Мозаичный портрет исполнен в мастерской М.В. Ломоносова, который во второй половине 1740-х годов начал работать как технолог по стеклу и художник-мозаичист. Открыв для себя мозаики в Софийском соборе Киева и храмах Новгорода, ученый в течение многих лет искал секрет изготовления смальт — цветных стекловидных масс разнообразных оттенков.

В России этот секрет был утерян, а в Западной Европе хранился в тайне. В организованной им первой в России химической лаборатории Ломоносов разработал технологию и технику производства смальт, а с начала 1750-х годов приступил к творческой практике.

В Копорском уезде близ Ораниенбаума у речки Рудицы им была учреждена стекольная Усть-Рудицкая фабрика, выпустившая свою первую художественную продукцию в 1754 году. Для набора Ломоносов пользовался смальтами довольно крупного размера — до 2 см.

Мозаичный портрет Елизаветы Петровны отличается изысканной полихромностью, блестяще передана фактура предметов, мягкость тканей. Муаровая лента ордена святого Андрея Первозванного состоит из голубых, лазоревых, синих смальт, чудесно подобранных по звучанию.
