Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dvarapala (?). Cave temple of Shiva, Elephanta Island

This figure stands in guardian position at the east shrine at Elephanta. But details of his clothing, jewelry, and hairstyle identify him as Shiva himself, while the smaller figures that he upholds on his hands are either personifications or who-knows-what. This statue is so unusual that it might not even be absurd to identify it as a rebus.
