is line is so far from the otherelectric railways operated by the Long Island Railroadthat it was essential to adopt a construction requiring theleast possible maintenance. The catenary system there-fore received favorable consideration and especially so inview of the companys experience on the Glen Cove (LongIsland) line. The latter road is a 5-mile catenary line in-stalled in 1905 on which very little has been expended asyet for the maintenance of the overhead work. Aside fromthe advantages of lower maintenance and possible changeto high-tension current in the future, the adoption of thecatenary permitted a pole spacing of 150 ft. instead of100 ft. and avoided installing a feeder cable on part ofthe route. In general the catenary is carried from 3-in. I-beambrackets attached to the same poles which carry the high-tension and other wires.
