nts whichcould be adopted to advantage by the company in Phila-delphia. The efforts of the company so far have been confined GROUT MIXING MACHINE OF THE UNITED RAILWAYSOF ST. LOUIS The accompanying illustration shows a grout mixingmachine designed and built by the United Railways Com-pany of St. Louis. This mixer has been found to be ofconsiderable value as a labor saver when track is beingconstructed in paved streets. The equipment comprises anold mail car from which one-half of the body has beenremoved, leaving an open platform on which the motor-driven mixer is mounted. The remaining half of thebody serves as a storage room for cement and tools. Themixer proper comprises a tank in which are agitating pad-dles carried on a horizontal shaft driven by a GE-800 motorwith standard railway gearing. The paddles within themixing tank were originally designed for a Drake concretemixer, but have been reset so they act against one anotherand do not tend to move the mixture from one end to the

A verylarge field is open in bringing the importance of the sub-ject of accident damages before the general public insuch a way as to enlist their hearty co-operation. It isbelieved that in time the company will be enabled to enlistthe support of a portion, at least, of the traveling publicand a very large number of the business houses, whichhave many teams upon public streets, in a general move-ment to prevent accidents. If placed before them in theproper light the subject can be made to appeal to them asbeing one of mutual interest. It has also been suggestedthat the subject might be placed to advantage in someway before the thousands of children in the public schoolsfor the purpose of inculcating caution in their minds.
