Europa se aleja de sus compañeras, situadas fuera de la escena, a las que dirige una última mirada, mientras es llevada por Júpiter, que, enamorado, se había transformado en toro para poder acercarse a la joven. La historia narrada en Las Metamorfosis de Ovidio, es representada por Rubens de manera muy sucinta en este boceto, previo a la realización del cuadro del mismo tema, que Erasmus Quellinus hizo para la Torre de la Parada.
