Summary
[edit]DescriptionEdward McBrier House, Buffalo, New York - 20200828.jpg |
English: The Edward McBrier House, 446 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. Built in 1903 and a contributing property to the locally listed and NRHP-certified Linwood Historic District, the McBrier House was cited by local preservationist Tim Tielman in a 1999 issue of Artvoice as an excellent example of the Queen Anne style of residential architecture and, despite the siding material, subtly distinct from the similar Shingle style due to its use of Classical ornamentation, such as the Ionic columns supporting the semioctagonal entrance portico to the right of the octagonal tent-roofed turret. Impressive as well, though in equally rough shape, is the leaded-glass bay window on the second floor. The house originally belonged to Edward Merton McBrier, a buyer and later a manager for Seymour Knox's chain of five-and-dime stores; McBrier lived there with his family until 1911 and is recorded as having moved to the Hotel Lenox on North Street thereafter. |
