Description

The Edison Park Field House in Edison Park, Chicago. It was originally designed as a school house for then-suburb Edison Park. Because Solon S. Spencer's original design was so expensive, the building was originally only half-completed. By 1910, residents wanted the school completed. This was a motivating factor when Edison Park citizens voted to be annexed by Chicago in 1910. By 1913, the Chicago Board of Education completed the building. At the time, it had three teachers and 100 students. In 1927, nearby Ebinger School was completed, making the Edison Park school somewhat redundant. When the Chicago Park District requested the construction of a new field house for Olympia Park, the District Board instead decided to use the old schoolhouse instead. In the 1930s, the building was also used as a sub branch of the Chicago Public Library.
