Summary
[edit]DescriptionEdgewise conglomerate 2.jpg |
English: Conglomerate is a poorly-sorted, siliciclastic sedimentary rock. The larger grains, such as pebbles or cobbles or boulders, are rounded to subrounded in shape, but angular to subangular clasts may also be present. The fine-grained matrix is sand or mud. Most conglomerates were deposited in stream/river environments or alluvial fan environments or some very shallow marine environments.
Pebble composition varies, but often consists of quartz (SiO2). Some conglomerates are lithic - they have abundant pebbles composed of rock fragments. The example seen here is an edgewise conglomerate, or flat-pebble conglomerate - most of the large clasts have a platy morphology. |
