Summary
[edit]DescriptionEast wall of Borthwick Castle - geograph.org.uk - 1119864.jpg |
English: East wall of Borthwick Castle In 1430 King James I granted a charter to Sir Wm.Borthwick to build a castle as reward for having been one of the hostages for the release of the King from captivity at York. In 1567 Mary Queen of Scots with her new husband Bothwell, were besieged here. Bothwell escaping, as did the Queen next day being lowered from an upper window dressed as a page. Some feat since the wall is 82 feet high. The walls are up to 14 feet thick but the effect of Cromwell's 1650 bombardment, leading to its surrender, can still be seen high on the east wall as shown in the photo. The castle is now a genuinely historic upmarket hotel. |
