English: East Town Pasture Large numbers of farms in the Barnard Castle area are painted white, which invariably indicates that they are part of the Raby Estate, although one presumes that there is nothing to stop other owners from whitewashing their buildings. The tradition originated with a former owner of the estate riding out one day, dropping in to a farm and expecting hospitality. This he duly received, but as the farm turned out to be beyond the boundaries of his estate, he also duly got a bill, and was caused much embarrassment. To ensure that this was never repeated, he decreed that all farms on the estate should be painted white to indicate their ownership (at a time when most buildings were bare stone). Other owners naturally avoided painting their farms white to avoid being put upon by hungry aristocrats... |
