Title
Early roman strap slide
Description
English: A complete copper alloy strap slide dating to the Roman period, c. 100 BC to 200 AD.

The strap slide is eye shaped with a central circular dome within an oval plate with one pointed end. The circle is made separate by a grooved border. There is a projection from the rounded end of the oval plate which creates a point around a small circular hole. The reverse is flat and undecorated with a rectangular bracket which is D-shaped in section.

Strap slides of this type are known from the early Roman period and the similarities between these and button and loop fasteners suggests they may be contemporary. Button and loop fasteners of this style are of Wild's Class III: Tear drop or petal headed and several examples have been recorded on the PAS database: NCL-0BD002, YORYM-6634B6 and SWYOR-FD85F6.
