Title
Early medieval strap fitting: Anglo-Scandinavian cheekpiece
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy openwork harness fitting (cheek piece bridle fitting) dating to the late Early Medieval period (AD 1000-1100). The cheek piece is Anglo-Scandinavian in design and is a fragment of a larger fitting. This example is one half of the cheek piece; the other side of the plate would have been symmetrical, with a central hole and centrally placed projecting arm for the attachment to the leather harness strap (Williams 2007:2). The plate is decorated in the 'jelling' style, with an inwards-looking beast apparently consuming its own body. This was a common decorative theme during this period. This example can be classified as William (2007) Type 1
