Title |
Early medieval sleeve clasp |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete catch-piece from a copper-alloy wrist-clasp, probably of Hines's Form B13a. What remains is the bar of the clasp, which is rectangular in shape, 34mm in length and 18mm in width, and a separate fragmentary plate. The front of the bar is decorated with two sets of four transverse grooves, each set 6mm from either end of the bar. There are traces of gilding. The bar is attached by two rivets, one at either end, to the remains of the copper-alloy plate; this plate is fragmentary due to an old break. Hines's Forms B13 and B14 consist of plates with separate bars, B13 having a rectangular plate and B14 a shaped plate. This wrist-clasp is Anglo-Saxon and late 5th- or 6th-century in date. |
