Title |
Early medieval pin; hand pin in the native celtic tradition |
||
Description |
English: Early medieval pin; cast copper alloy ‘hand’ pin of late 5th century date. The pin is of a native celtic style known as a hand pin due to its rough resemblance to a clenched fist with fingers sticking out. This example is in copper alloy with three ‘finger’ knops atop a simple semi-circular plate. There is a horizontal incised line between the knops and the plate. The pin shaft is fitted to the centre of the back of the head and extends a short way before bending down at a right angle. The shaft is simple and tapered with a flattened end, which may represent post-depositional damage. It is also now somewhat bent. There is no further extant decoration.
Length (approx) 73mm, width 11.8mm, thickness 9.7mm, diameter (shaft) 3.6mm, weight 7.11g Refs: Elaborate examples of hand pins in precious metals are known, for instance in S.M. Youngs 1989, “The Work of Angels” Masterpieces of Celtic Metalwork 6th - 9th century A.D., joint British Museum, National Museum of Ireland & National Museums of Scotland exhibition catalogue, London 1989 See also examples recorded on the database, such as SOMDOR-D60932 and PAS-E91188 |
