Title |
Early medieval cruciform brooch |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of the Early Medieval/Anglo-Saxon period. Only the zoomorphic foot of the brooch survives intact, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The surviving fragment of the foot comprises a horse-head terminal with a flattened spatulate snout. To either side of the snout, above the spatulate terminal, are projecting and flattened circular nostrils. The snout is outlined with a groove on either side between the snout and the nostrils, which join at a squared-off end just below the eyes. The eyes are circular projections either side of a raised flattened triangular platform.The back face of the terminal is slightly concave and shows a small casting flaw. All surfaces have a dark green patina. There is surface decoration around the perimeter of the snout and nostrils in the shape of lines of crescents, with some radiating marks possibly indicative of fur.
Overall dimensions: length 41.8mm, width 33.3mm, thickness 4.2mm. Weight: 11.8g Dating: probably 6th century AD. |
