Title |
Early medieval cheekpiece |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy late Anglo-Saxon cheekpiece fragment. D Williams states that "A single cheek piece comprises a flat plate with a centrally-placed projecting arm for attachment to the leather harness strap; the arm usually terminates in a knobbed loop. Cheek pieces were provided in pairs and each is pierced with a round hole through which the ends of the jointed iron bit (the bar which the horse clenches in its teeth) projected. Sometimes this hole has been worn through friction against the bit, causing the cheek piece to be discarded." All that survives of this example is a fragment of the flat plate, it is roughly triangular in shape and measures 45.45mm in length and 32.53mm in width. It has rounded projections at the two complete corners and in the centre of one edge. There are also four circular holes of varying sizes through it. The front face is decorated further with a border of small indented rectangles and similar lines of indented rectangles also cross between the circular holes. The back face is undecorated. |
