Title |
Early Medieval to Medieval strap fitting |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy strap fitting of 11th century date.
The attachment end of the artefact has a short, parallel-sided portion at the base, above which it flares into three rounded lobes. The surfaces of this piece are flat and there are two circular rivet holes, located one above the other. The upper surface also bears traces of a lightly incised pattern of grooves. At the base is a moulded, downward-facing zoomorphic head. This head is thicker than the atatchment plate, the junction between the two elements consisting of a right-angled step. The animal's ears are small; a central ridge divides the two eyes, which are located on the angled outer surface, are of pointed-oval shape and have moulded pupils; the face narrows towards the rounded snout, the surface of which also steps downwards at the bottom. The object has a dull, matte brown surface. It measures 32.9mm long, 14.9mm wide and upto 4.5mm thick (head). The weight is 4.88g. Compare a more sophisticated example, with hollow reverse, at IOW-4332B2. This piece forms part of an interesting group of related 11th century metalwork - see also BH-9BC397, BH-9AD904, BH-9B4B78 and BH-9C3582. |
