Title |
Early Medieval sleeve clasp |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper alloy sleeve clasp dating to the Early Medieval period (c. AD 450-570). Hines form B12b. The clasp consists of a sub-rectangular plate. One edge is straight with an integral square loop attached to the lower half. The opposite edge appears broken where catch elements would have been attached. The plate is decorated with two sets of three engraved lines running perpendicular to the plate.
The clasp would have been as part of a pair. The clasp has a mid-green patina. It is 22.6mm long, 14.2mm wide, 2.3mm thick and weighs 3.2g. Hines Class B12 is characterised by the presence of a simple rectangular bar with projecting sewing lugs and spiggot. This group of clasps is concentrated in and around East Anglia and is generally dated to the 6th century AD. Wrist clasps have been studied and classified by Hines (1993) and Penn and Brugmann (2007). Hines three levels of classification suggests a date range of late 5th to 6th century for these objects. Penn and Brugmann’s chronological study of selected East Anglian grave-good types included a small sample size of wrist clasps which limited their suggested dating to the mid-to late 5th century. As these systems have not been completely reconciled it seems reasonable to give all wrist-clasps a wide date-range of c.AD 450-570 (see https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/wrist-clasps/).
