Title
Early Medieval silver Carolingian strap fitting
Description
English: An incomplete cast silver Carolingian-style strap-end dating to the late Early Medieval period (c. AD 800-1000). The strap-end is rectangular in plan and a hollow D-shape in section. The strap-end is thicker at the terminal, while the opposite end is thinner and has a sub-rectangular slot, presumably for attachment to a belt or strap.

The upper surface is decorated in high relief with cast floral design, divided into two long rectangular panels by a central rib with a longitudinal central groove and a double collar-like feature at one end (top as pictured). Either side of this is a plant motif, appearing to comprise a double-curved stem with an outwards-pointing trifoliate flower towards the attachment end of the strap-end, and an inwards-facing trifoliate flower at the terminal. Further irregularly-shaped linear mouldings appear between the stems and the long edges of the frame either side, and there are irregularly-shaped mouldings with grooves beneath the flowers on the lower edge.

Attached to the underside of the fitting is a thin silver plate with two circular-sectioned rivets at the attachment end, which is unevenly broken. This may be a later repair. Most of the recessed, and some of the raised, areas of the upper plate have a patchy mid-green and brown patina while the back plate has several blemishes and scratches across it.
