Title
Early Medieval Zoomorphic Buckle Frame
Description
English: A cast copper alloy buckle frame of probable Early Medieval date. The frame is D-shaped in plan and oval in section with a flattened back. It has a flaring exterior edge, a flat back and narrows slightly towards two projecting terminals where the integral offset bar joins the frame. The upper surface of the frame is worn, but appears to have moulded zoomorphic decoration, which possibly consists of a single or two intertwined beasts with heads forming the terminals and 'biting' the bar. The moulded decoration is asymmetrical, swelling to its greatest extent at the center of the exterior edge of the frame, and has traces of gilding. The frame measures 25.10mm in height, 15.67mm in width, 4.73mm in thickness, and weighs 3.89g. Buckle frames of similar form are noted on the Portable Antiquities database and dated to between the 9th and 12th centuries AD. In particular, examples from Yorkshire (NCL-D26DB6, NCL-667DB8 and SWYOR-CC4246) and Nottinghamshire (DENO-5BFEE2, DENO-0F5AB1) have similar form and zoomorphic decoration. This example is of similar 9th-12th century AD date.
