Title
Early Medieval : Sword Pommel
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy sword pommel of Early Medieval date, circa AD 900 - 1100. The pommel is broadly triangular in plan with a convex base and a circular perforation at the apical knob through which the tang of the sword would have originally passed. The pommel consists of five hollow curved lobes which decrease in size from the central and largest lobe. No rivets are present on the pommel which suggests it was held in place simply by the hammered tang.

The metal has a mid reddish-brown patina and is worn. The pommel is 28.1mm tall, 63.4mm wide 3.3mm thick and weighs 47.8g.
This example appears to belong to Petersen's (1919) type L VI pommels, which are a fusion of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian fashions. As such it can be dated to the Early Medieval period, circa the 10th or 11th century.

Numerous similar examples have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database such as BERK-A7A6C1, NCL-6ACEB3 and SWYOR-7CBF81.
