Title
Early Early Medieval Great Square-Headed Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Early Saxon gilt copper alloy disc-headed stud, probably from a Great square-headed brooch: chip-carved decoration comprises a reserved central disc within two Style I beak-headed beasts with triple-strand ribbon-like bodies, part of one missing where the outside edge is broken. There is a circular scar (diam.6mm) on the reverse where the integral shank is missing. Diameter 25mm. No close parallel is found in Hines (1997). However, see examples of studs from Mildenhall (Plate 75a) and Ruskington (Plate 86a). The breaks are ancient. It dates from the 6th century.
