Title
Early Anglo-Saxon sleeve clasp of Hines' form B12
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early Anglo-Saxon wrist/sleeve clasp of Hines' form B12, dating c. 475-600 AD. The object consists the 'male' hooked half of one clasp, with its opposing half missing in old damage. It takes the form of a sub-rectangular bar that plano-convex in section, with raised rectangular panels at each terminal end and its midpoint (a total of 3). Between each panel is moulded decoration in the form of c. 5-6 raised tightly spaced transverse collars, giving these sections of the object a 'ribbed' effect. From the rear face of each panel projects an integrally cast sewing lug, each of which is hemi-spherical in plan with a central circular aperture, the middle example being slightly more sturdy than the examples at each of the terminals. The front edge of the clasp-half is featureless, with the exception of an incomplete projecting rectangular hooked element that originally would have attached to the opposing clasp. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 30.50mm long, 15.98mm wide at its widest point, and 2.45mm thick between the hooked element and the upper surface of the clasp. It weighs 4.52g.

Similar clasps are illustrated by Hines (1993, pp. 46-39) as well as recorded on the PAS database, particularly an example from Mildenhall (SF-60BBC4).
