Title
Early-medieval to medieval lead fishing weight
Description
English: A complete cast lead weight of probable early-medieval to medieval date (c1000 - 1400). The weight is in the form of a cylinder, 26.58mm in length and 20.64mm in diameter at the widest point, slightly tapering at each end. There is a central perforation running the length of the weight, 6.5mm in diameter.

Running through this perforation is a length of twisted rope made up of multiple strands of fibre, possibly sisal. The rope is 105mm in length with damaged and frayed ends. There is a long length of much thinner twine, again made up of strands of twisted fibre, and only 0.45mm thick, tied to the thicker rope in a series of windings and knots and looped across the weight then tied at each end of it to secure its position on the rope.

This form of weight is common for fishing weights, particularly those used along the bottom edge of a net and has been in use for a very long period of time.

The weight was found in the black silt, deeply-dredged from an inland river. Associated finds from the same source included early-medieval and medieval objects but nothing from later periods, so it is likely that this dates from a simliar period and is almost certainly a weight from a fishing net.
