Title
Early-medieval strap end: Strap end
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy strap end dating to the early-medieval period. The strap end has a simple zoomorphic terminal of a narrowing head or snout with two recesses intended to represent eyes. Behind the head of the animal the strap end slowly widens into a rectangular plate decorated with triple chevrons within an incised linear border. There are four small holes on this back plate that are likely to be decorative rather than functional. The back end of the strap end, where the copper would have split for insertion of the strap, is now broken and missing. The revers is plain. This strap end fits into Thomas's Class A Type 2 and dates to the 9th century AD.
