Title |
Early-medieval book mount |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy mount of probable Early-medieval date. No exact parallel could be found for this piece; however, the decoration is similar to that seen on carved stone 'Celtic' crosses. The form suggests it is probably a book or harness mount. The surviving fragment is sub-rectangular in plan. The cast decoration in the upper surface consists of a central panel of interlace with a moulded ring above and below. These rings each have two central apertures which probably served as sewing holes. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The corroded fragment measures 26.1mm long, 19.1mm wide and 2.1mm thick. The weight is 4.08g. This fragment is poorly preserved but the surviving traces of interlace suggest that this is of the net-like form seen on Irish metalwork of the eighth-ninth century. |
