Title
Early-medieval : Finger ring
Description
English: Object Date: 8th century

Description: Finger ring fragments
Five fragments of a late Saxon, originally gilt and probably niello-inlaid silver finger ring. All fragments are joining and represent a complete ring with a decorated, rounded bezel. The whole ring is of flat cross-section and the bezel has a fine split in one place.
Faint incised, geometric ornament is still visible on the band, which originally overlapped and may have been soldered at the narrowest point; however that join has come apart in antiquity.

Discussion: The bezel is decorated with fine scroll- and knot-work similar to that seen on the River Witham pins (Wilson 1964, cat. no. 19) or a disc brooch from Ixham, Suffolk (ibid., no. 25). More recent, comparable finds include a silver fragment from Covehite, Suffolk (TAR 2003, no. 87.1), a pin head fragment from Norfolk (ibid., no. 102) and another pin head fragment from the Wichkam Market area, Suffolk (TAR 2002, no. 48).

Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) of the surface of the mercury gilded finger ring indicated a silver composition of 87-91%, the remainder being copper. The decorative detail probably included niello inlay as well as gilding, but the condition of the ring is so degraded it is difficult to be certain.

Dimensions: Max. width of bezel 22mm.
