Title |
Early-medieval : Bead |
||
Description |
English: A glass bead, possibly dating to the early medieval period -therefore Anglo Saxon. The bead is sub-circular in shape and has a hole through the centre. The bead measures 15.7mm x 7.7mm. It weighs 2.08g.
The bead would have been made by melting glass into a crucible. Then an iron rod would have been used to gather the glass. The glass was then trickled onto the rod, forming the central hole and then it would have been rolled, to smooth the outer surface. The manufacture of glass beads is exampled fully in Leahy (2003) see reference below. The bead is translucent. The surface of the glass is slightly worn. It is a light greyish-blue colour. |
