Title
Early-medieval : Ansate Brooch
Description
English: An almost complete copper alloy ansate brooch of Early-Medieval date. The brooch comprises a rectangular piece of metal which is curved to form a bevelled arch at its centre. Transverse bars are present to either end of the brooch as well as at the bend to either end of the arch. A fifth transverse bar, this time doubled in width, is present at the centre of the arch.

A double lug hinge mechanism is present on the reverse of one terminal and a curved catch plate remains on the opposite terminal. The pin no longer reminas.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 44.5mm long, 9.1mm wide, 2.8mm thick and weighs 9.2g.

Brooches of this type date to the 8th or 9th centuries, and most probably represent an English copy of a Frankish style. A similar example is illustrated in Whitehead, p.380, fig.239, no.1686.
