Title
Early-Medieval small-long brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Early-Medieval cast copper-alloy small-long brooch, dating to c.AD. 500-600.

The head of the brooch is broadly square in plan, with a rectangular cross-section.  It is undecorated, with two semi-circular notches on each horizontal edge and one on each vertical edge.   An arched bow (D-shaped in cross-section) expands from the lower edge of the head and is decorated with a central vertical rib.  The foot is rectangular in plan and cross-section and is decorated with two pairs of transverse ribs, separated by a transverse groove.  The terminal of the foot is missing.

On the reverse, the pin is missing but the pin attachment projects from the lower portion of the head and remains of the catch plate project from the foot.

The brooch has a dark green patina on both faces, possibly due to cleaning.

Broadly similar to Hattatt (2000: 376), fig.235, nos. 674, 675.

Dimensions - length: 46mm; width of head: 18.6mm; width of foot: 5.9mm; thickness of head: 1.6mm; thickness head inc. pin attachment: 8mm; weight: 6.19g.
