Title |
Early-Medieval cheekpiece (fragment) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy bridle cheekpiece of Early Medieval to Medieval date.
The piece consists of an openwork plate of sub-triangular form. The shortest side of the piece is not original, each of the three projecting prongs having been broken in antiquity. The other sides appear to have survived in their original forms. The upper surface of the object bears moulded and incised zoomorphic pattern of uncertain nature. The point at the narrow end takes the form of a right-facing zoomorphic head, with recessed eye, crest and upturned snout. A curved projection beneath this snout could be interpreted as a tongue; in reality, however, it probably represents a broken side of the aperture below. In addition to the moulded elements and apertures, there are two areas of incised lines, one set at 90 degrees to the other. The underside of the cheekpiece has a series of shallow depressions which correspond to the design above. Iron corrosion or mineralised leather deposits fill these depressions The object measures 43.3mm long, 25.9mm wide, 4.5mm thick and weighs 14g. David Williams (pers. comm.) has identified this artefact, which he dates to between c. 1020 and c. 1100. |
