Title
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Sword Pommel. Treasure case no. 2009 T173
Description
English: Fragment of a silver-gilt sword pommel of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) 6th century date. Treasure case no. 2009 T173.

The fragment consists of one side and the adjacent shoulder from one end of a sword pommel; the back is hollow. It is decorated with zoomorphic motifs in Salin's Style I: on the side only a rear limb survives, but on the shoulder there is a complete animal within a panel facing the end of the pommel. There are worn traces of interlocking triangles along the top border of the side, which would originally have been nielloed, and at the end there are the stubs of two loops for rivets to attach the pommel to the upper guard.

The pommel appears from what survives to belong to Menghin's 6th-century, Brighthampton-Ciply type, which has a widespread distribution from southern England to northern France, Germany and Scandinavia (W. Menghin, 1983, Das Schwert im Frühen Mittelalter, Stuttgart, 135, 309-11, map 2).

21.0 x 11.7mm. Weight: 4.30g.
