Title |
Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Early-Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) 'D'-shaped buckle (c. 500-c. 600). The frame is 'D'-shaped in plan and the bar and pin is missing. It is convex on the outer and inner faces. There is a scar at each end of the frame where the narrowed bar joined but it is unclear what shape the bar would have been in cross-section. On the outside edge there are four evenly spaced pairs of parallel grooves that extend from the top to the bottom. These features are about 6.8 apart at the top and about 9.2mm apart at the bottom. The frame is badly corroded in places and has active bronze disease. Tinning is visible on both faces. There is a small deposit of corroded iron on each face and iron staining has migrated from these deposits. The iron may be part of a pin. However, this is unclear. 30.7 40.8 x 14.3mm. Weight: 37.11g. |
