Summary
[edit]DescriptionESA Galileo Passive Hydrogen Maser.jpg |
English: Space Passive Hydrogen Maser used in ESA Galileo satellites as a master clock for an onboard timing system. This atomic clock type uses the ultra stable 1,420,405,751.7667 hertz (Hz) transition in a hydrogen atom to measure time to within 0.45 nanoseconds over 12 hours. A timing error of 1 nanosecond or 1 billionth of a second (10−9 or 1/1,000,000,000 s) results in a 29.9792458 cm (11.8 in) positional error on Earth's surface.
