Australia’s Murray-Darling Basin is one of the world’s driest river basins. It is also the country’s agricultural heartland and home to hundreds of ecologically important wetlands—16 of which are internationally recognized. Regional water managers here have many difficult water allocation decisions to make.

For the first time, thanks to team of researchers from New South Wales and NASA/USGS Landsat data, water managers have a series of maps that show the basin’s dramatically changing expanse of surface water over the last quarter century. These maps—created using more than 25,000 Landsat images—show decision makers how vegetation responds to flooding, how ephemeral wetlands are connected during wet periods, and what the major drivers of surface water change are.
