Description Cucurbita foetidissima—calabazilla. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center says this is a "malodorous plant." Yet, if the archaeological evidence is correct, the gourd has been associated with humans for at least 9,000 years. Occurring naturally in the arid and semi-arid regions of southwestern United States and northern Mexico, it is also a camp follower found on waste land near humans throughout the region. The fatty flesh of the fruit has been proposed as a source of biofuel. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
