for Oil and Gas Occurrence By J. P. RowE Written for Engineering and Mining Journal THE MATERIAL for this article has been gatheredfrom my field notes, from the bulletins of the U. S.Geological Survey, and from every other availablesource. The only detailed geological work that has beendone in Montana is that of the U. S. Geological Survey. The search for oil and gas in the state has been inprogress since 1900. Parties from Butte started todrill a well in that year in the northern part of Flat-head County, known as the Kintla Lake district. Dawson County, in the extreme eastern part of thestate. A sufficient flow of gas was encountered to bepiped a few miles to Glendive, and at present manyhouses are heated and lighted by the gas. About this time Havre, the county seat of HillCounty, in the northern part of the state, drilled almostdirectly in the town and secured a fairly good flow ofgas. Not long after gas was discovered at Havreseveral other wells were drilled in the state. Commer-

• Producing on Wells> Producing Gas W&lls PETROLEUM AND GAS AREAS OF MONTANA Several thousand dollars were spent in drilling, butwithout success. A little later work was done in whatis known as the Browning or Swift Current field, abouteighty miles north of Browning. In 1904, a well was drilled in the southern part ofCarbon County on a sharply defined anticline. The crestof the anticline is in Jurassic rocks, and therefore nooil was struck, although a splendid flow of water wasobtained. Somewhat later, drilling took place on what isknown as the Glendive or Cedar Creek anticline, in cial gas was secured at Baker, the county seat of FallonCounty. In 1914 a well was drilled at Great Falls. Thewell was drilled in a flat country and in the Kootenaiformation and was a failure. In 1914 a great oil excitement took place in the SweetGrass Hills district. This locality is partly in TooleCounty and partly in Liberty County. The hills arethree sets in number, East, Gold and West Buttes,
