Summary
[edit]DescriptionDust storm off West Africa (MODIS 2018-01-24).jpg |
English: Strong winds blew dust from the Sahara Desert across West Africa and across the North Atlantic Ocean in January 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of a sheet of dust spreading over the coast on January 17.
The Canary Islands are visible in the north of the image and are partially covered in Saharan dust. The tan dust covers Western Sahara on the coast, extending from Morocco (north) to Mauritania. Dust can also be seen well inland over Algeria. Africa is the world’s largest source of dust to the atmosphere, contributing about 70 percent of the global total. Airborne mineral dust from the world’s deserts delivers nutrients to the land and ocean, and affects the atmosphere and climate. |
