Description
English: Strong winds continued to raise dust across western China’s Taklimakan Desert in early April 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite captured a true-color image of the event on April 6. The dust was so thick in the south and west that much of the land was obscured from view. The Taklimakan Desert is the warmest, driest, and largest desert in China. Shifting sand dunes cover most of the desert floor, some rising as tall as 200 meters (656 feet). Dust storms are the primary natural hazard in this region, with dust storms occurring any time of the year, but more frequently in the spring.
