Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Strong winds were blowing streamers of dust from the Bodele Depression almost every day in November 2022. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Chad on November 25 when thick bands of light-colored dust were rising from the Depression and blowing towards the southwest. Winds frequently from northeast to southwest across parts of northern Africa, especially during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter. In Chad, such winds are concentrated as they blow through a gap between two mountain ranges in the northern section of the country. This wind then crosses the Bodele Depression, the site of a massive dried-up ancient lake in Chad, where they pick up light-colored dust from the bed of the nearly-extinct lake. In the lower right section of the image (southeast) a bit of green marks the northern edge of Lake Chad, the modern small remnant of the ancient lake.
