Summary
[edit]DescriptionDune flora - geograph.org.uk - 1465919.jpg |
English: Dune flora The spit of sand dunes separating Gorteen Bay from Dog's Bay appears to be a classic tombolo since there are no visible rock outcrops nor erratic boulders anywhere amidst the sand, which is very unusual for this coast. The water of Gorteen Bay can be seen over the crest of the sandy meadows behind the western dunes. A tombolo is formed by refraction of the wave energy around an island causing a build-up of sediment. The sediment here is a fine, white sand which supports a fascinating collection of plants including Sea Holly (Eryngium maritimus) and Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis). The Ragwort is less worthy of note. |
