Dundurn Castle stands on a bluff overlooking Hamilton Harbour at the westerly entrance to the city. The 72-room mansion was built in 1835 by Sir Allan Napier MacNab, lawyer, businessman, veteran of the War of 1812, and Prime Minister of the Province of Canada in 1854-56. It was designed by architect Robert Charles Wetherell. In 1899, the castle and 31-acre property was purchased for $50,000.00 by the City of Hamilton, followed in May of 1900 by a spectacular dedication of Dundurn as a public park. Dundurn Castle was restored in 1967 as a Centennial project by the City of Hamilton. This photograph shows a view of the north side of Dundurn Castle.
