Summary
[edit]DescriptionDumb drift.jpg |
English: Furnace ventilation in early coal mines. A furnace at the bottom of the upshaft heats air, which rises, setting up a current that ventilates the entire mine workings. Since vitiated air from the mine may contain explosive fire damp, it is not used to feed the furnace, but escapes through the upper dumb drift. The furnace is fed with air obtained directly from the downshaft (not shown).
The author, a Pennsylvania mining engineer, remembered these installations from the England of his youth. |
