Summary
DescriptionDrogheda St. Peter's Church of Ireland Dowdall Tomb Slab 2019 09 13.jpg |
Graveyard of St. Peter's Church, Peter's Hill, Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland
English: Side slab of the 16th-century Dowdall tomb inserted into the east wall of the graveyard of St. Peter's Church with a length of 6 feet and 26 inches in height. The slab is divided in three panels by pilasters. Each of the panels presents a shield. The centre shield appears to depict the resurrection with the no longer readable letters “I.N.R.I” on a scroll-like element above. The other two shields are similar on the dexter side bearing the arms of the Dowdell family Gule a fess between five martlets argent. The left scroll-like element carried the letters “P.D. & A.D.”, the right one “P.D. & T.W.“. This slab is very close to the slabs of the chest tomb of Sir Edmond Goldyng but has no connection to it. (See Lord Walter FitzGerald, St. Peter's Parish–Drogheda, in: Journal of the Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead in Ireland, vol. 4, 1900, pp. 273–279; Bernard Burke, The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales; comprising a registry of armorial bearings from the earliest to the present time, p. 296; Victor M. Buckley and P. David Sweetman, Archaeological Survey of County Louth, pp. 275–278, entry 958.h).
